Betting Odds Explained for South African Punters
Most South African bookmakers use decimal odds. They are the easiest format to understand once you know the simple rule below.
Reading decimal odds
Decimal odds show your total return per R1 staked, including your stake. To find your potential return, multiply your stake by the odds:
- Odds 1.50, stake R100 → return R150 (R50 profit)
- Odds 2.00, stake R100 → return R200 (R100 profit)
- Odds 3.40, stake R100 → return R340 (R240 profit)
What the odds imply
Lower odds mean an outcome is more likely (and pays less); higher odds mean it is less likely (and pays more). Odds also include the bookmaker's margin, which is why shopping around for better prices matters.
A word of caution
No bet is guaranteed, and higher odds do not mean "easy money" — they mean higher risk. Never stake money you cannot afford to lose.
